“For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.” (John 3:16, NIV)

"The Fruit of a New Focus"

“He is like a tree planted by streams of water, which yields its fruit in season and whose leaf does not wither. Whatever he does prospers.” Psalm 1:3a

Years ago we lived on a small parcel of land that had an underground spring which fed water into a nearby stream. During the hottest summer days, that little spring bubbled fresh water into the brook. On the coldest winter nights when the temperature dropped below zero our little spring continued to produce flowing water, even under thick ice. The spring never failed to flow.

Water, especially in the arid region of Palestine, remains a valuable commodity. Water sustains life. Beautiful, fruit bearing trees continue to flourish in the deserts of Israel today due to well designed irrigation systems. Like a tree, we too must be nourished by the water of God’s Word lest we deny ourselves His life giving spiritual sustenance. Even in the midst of life’s deserts, when tough times scorch our hearts like the hot sun, spiritual refreshment awaits in the pages of Scripture.

Yesterday, we discussed the importance of meditating upon passages from the Bible. Immediately following that exhortation, the psalmist metaphorically motivates his reader by saying, “Look at the byproduct which accompanies biblical meditation, a fruitful life awaits those who obey!” The book of Galatians explains, “But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control.” (Gal. 5:22-23). Wow! When times are tough and tempers flair, an extra dose of spiritual fruit can certainly be helpful.

Our family’s bubbling fresh water spring reminds me of how God’s Word operates, both are consistent. Despite the circumstances which surround your life, the trials, temptations, hardships, or pain, a flowing stream of spiritual nourishment can be attained by anyone who desires to find refreshment in His Word. Like a sponge, our hearts and minds must be porous and open so that we might be receptive to His teachings, exhortations, rebukes, and encouragement.

The key to a fruit filled life is this: 1) Learn God’s Word and 2) Faithfully submit to God’s Word.

Prayer for Today: Dear Lord, help me to be motivated to read your Word each day and be receptive to your commands so that I might draw strength and courage from your promises.
